Who was Barnabas?

Barnabas was a Levite from Cyprus named Joses, whom the apostles called Barnabas, meaning "the son of consolation." He sold a piece of land and laid the money at the apostles' feet (Acts 4:36–37). When the disciples in Jerusalem were afraid of Saul after his conversion, Barnabas brought him to the apostles and spoke for him (Acts 9:27). Sent to Antioch, he was described as "a good man, and full of the Holy Ghost and of faith" (Acts 11:24), and he brought Saul from Tarsus to teach there.

The Holy Ghost set apart Barnabas and Saul for the work He had called them to (Acts 13:2), and they traveled through Cyprus and Asia Minor. At Lystra the crowd called Barnabas Jupiter and Paul Mercurius (Acts 14:12). Later the two disagreed sharply over John Mark, so Barnabas took Mark and sailed to Cyprus (Acts 15:37–39).
