Who was Nebuchadnezzar?
Nebuchadnezzar was the king of Babylon who besieged Jerusalem and carried King Jehoiachin, the treasures of the temple and thousands of people away to Babylon (2 Kings 24:10–16). Later his army burned the temple and the city (2 Kings 25:8–9). Among the young captives brought to his court were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah (Daniel 1:6).
Nebuchadnezzar dreamed of a great image with a head of gold, and Daniel explained the dream (Daniel 2:31–45). The king set up a golden image sixty cubits high and threw Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego into a fiery furnace when they would not bow. He saw a fourth man walking with them in the fire, unharmed (Daniel 3:25). Because of his pride he was driven from men and ate grass like oxen (Daniel 4:33). When his reason returned, he praised and honored the King of heaven (Daniel 4:37).
