What does the Bible say about the birth of Jesus?
Long before Jesus was born, Isaiah wrote that a virgin would bear a son called Immanuel (Isaiah 7:14), and Micah named Bethlehem as the birthplace of a ruler in Israel (Micah 5:2). The angel Gabriel told Mary in Nazareth that she would bear a son named Jesus (Luke 1:26–31), and an angel told Joseph in a dream to take Mary as his wife (Matthew 1:20–21). Because of a decree from Caesar Augustus, Joseph and Mary went to Bethlehem, where Jesus was born and laid in a manger, for there was no room in the inn (Luke 2:1–7).
An angel brought the good news to shepherds, and a multitude of the heavenly host praised God (Luke 2:13–14). Wise men followed a star and brought gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh (Matthew 2:11). Warned in a dream, Joseph took the child and His mother to Egypt (Matthew 2:13–14).
