What are the Ten Commandments?

The Ten Commandments are the words God spoke to Israel at Mount Sinai after bringing them out of Egypt (Exodus 20:1–17), repeated by Moses in Deuteronomy 5. They say to have no other gods, make no graven images, not take the Lord's name in vain, keep the sabbath day holy, honor father and mother, and not kill, commit adultery, steal, bear false witness or covet. God gave Moses two tables of stone written with the finger of God (Exodus 31:18).

When Moses came down the mountain and saw the people dancing around a golden calf, he threw the tables down and broke them (Exodus 32:19). God told him to cut two new tables like the first (Exodus 34:1), and they were kept in the ark (Deuteronomy 10:5). Jesus summed up the law as loving God with all your heart and loving your neighbor as yourself (Matthew 22:37–40).
