What is the Book of Deuteronomy about?
Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Bible and the last of the five books of Moses. It records the words Moses spoke to Israel on the plains of Moab, just before the people crossed the Jordan into Canaan (Deuteronomy 1:1–5). He retells the journey from Mount Horeb, repeats the Ten Commandments (Deuteronomy 5:6–21) and urges a new generation to stay faithful.
At its heart is the call, "Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD," followed by the command to love God with all the heart, soul and might (Deuteronomy 6:4–5). Moses sets before the people blessings for obedience and curses for disobedience, and tells them to choose life (Deuteronomy 30:19). Joshua is appointed to lead them after him. The book ends with Moses viewing the land from Mount Nebo, his death, and the words that there arose not a prophet since in Israel like him (Deuteronomy 34:10).
