What is the Book of 2 Kings about?
2 Kings is the twelfth book of the Bible. It opens with Elijah taken up by a whirlwind into heaven as a chariot of fire appears (2 Kings 2:11), and Elisha receiving his mantle. Elisha's many miracles follow: oil that fills every borrowed vessel, a Shunammite woman's son raised to life, and the Syrian captain Naaman healed of leprosy after washing seven times in the Jordan (2 Kings 5:14).
The book traces the kings of both Israel and Judah, most of whom did evil in the sight of the Lord. The northern kingdom falls to Assyria and its people are carried away (2 Kings 17:6). In Judah, King Hezekiah trusts God when the Assyrians threaten Jerusalem, and young King Josiah repairs the temple and finds the book of the law (2 Kings 22:8). Even so, Babylon finally burns Jerusalem and the temple and carries Judah into exile (2 Kings 25:8–11).
