What is the Book of 1 Kings about?

1 Kings is the eleventh book of the Bible. It begins as David's life ends and Solomon becomes king. When God offers him whatever he asks, Solomon asks for an understanding heart (1 Kings 3:9), and his wisdom becomes famous, reaching even the queen of Sheba. He builds the temple in Jerusalem and dedicates it with a long prayer (1 Kings 8:22–30), but in old age his foreign wives turn his heart after other gods.

After Solomon's death the kingdom divides. Ten tribes follow Jeroboam in the north, while Rehoboam rules Judah (1 Kings 12:16–20). The later chapters follow the prophet Elijah, who is fed by ravens, raises a widow's son and calls down fire from heaven on Mount Carmel before the prophets of Baal (1 Kings 18:38). Afterward he hears God in "a still small voice" (1 Kings 19:12). The book ends as Ahab's son Ahaziah begins to reign.
