Who was Isaac?
Isaac was the son God promised to Abraham and Sarah. He was born when Abraham was a hundred years old, and Sarah said, "God hath made me to laugh" (Genesis 21:5–6). When Isaac was a young man, God tested Abraham by telling him to offer Isaac on a mountain in the land of Moriah. Isaac carried the wood and asked where the lamb was. At the last moment the angel of the Lord stopped Abraham, and a ram caught in a thicket was offered instead (Genesis 22:7–13).
Abraham's servant found Rebekah at a well and brought her back to be Isaac's wife (Genesis 24:67). After years of waiting, she gave birth to twins, Esau and Jacob. Isaac loved Esau, but in his old age, when his eyes were dim, Jacob deceived him and received the blessing meant for his brother (Genesis 27:18–29). Isaac died at the age of 180 (Genesis 35:28).
