Who was Samson?
Samson was one of the judges of Israel at a time when the Philistines ruled over the land. An angel announced his birth to his parents and said he would be a Nazarite from the womb, so no razor was to touch his head (Judges 13:5). The Spirit of the Lord gave him great strength, and he tore apart a young lion with his bare hands (Judges 14:5–6).
Samson fought the Philistines many times, once killing a thousand men with the jawbone of a donkey (Judges 15:15). He loved Delilah, who was paid by the Philistine lords to discover the secret of his strength. When she finally had his hair shaved, his strength left him, and the Philistines put out his eyes and set him to grind in prison (Judges 16:19–21). As his hair grew back, he prayed for strength once more and pulled down the house of Dagon, dying with the Philistines inside (Judges 16:30).
