Who was Aaron?
Aaron was the brother of Moses and Miriam, from the tribe of Levi, and three years older than Moses (Exodus 7:7). When Moses said he was slow of speech, God made Aaron his spokesman (Exodus 4:14–16). Together they stood before Pharaoh, and Aaron's rod became a serpent that swallowed the rods of the Egyptian magicians (Exodus 7:10–12).
God chose Aaron and his sons to serve as priests, and Aaron became Israel's first high priest, dressed in holy garments with a breastplate bearing the names of the twelve tribes. But while Moses was on Mount Sinai, Aaron gave in to the people and made a golden calf (Exodus 32:1–4). Later his rod budded, blossomed and yielded almonds, showing that God had chosen him (Numbers 17:8). Aaron died on Mount Hor, and Israel mourned him for thirty days (Numbers 20:28–29).
