Who was the Apostle Paul?

Paul, first known as Saul, was a Jew from Tarsus, a Pharisee and a fierce persecutor of the early church. He was present at the stoning of Stephen (Acts 7:58). On the road to Damascus a light from heaven shone around him, he fell to the ground, and the risen Jesus spoke to him (Acts 9:3–6). Blinded for three days, he was healed through a disciple named Ananias and began preaching that Jesus is the Son of God.

Paul became the great missionary to the Gentiles. With companions such as Barnabas and Silas he traveled across Asia Minor and Greece, planting churches and enduring beatings, prison and shipwreck (2 Corinthians 11:24–27). Thirteen New Testament letters are traditionally attributed to him, including Romans, Corinthians and Galatians. After his arrest in Jerusalem he appealed to Caesar and was taken to Rome (Acts 28:16).
