Who was Abraham?
Abraham, first called Abram, was the son of Terah and came from Ur of the Chaldees. God called him to leave his country and his father's house, promising to make of him a great nation and to bless all families of the earth through him (Genesis 12:1–3). He traveled to Canaan with his wife Sarai and his nephew Lot.
Although he and Sarah were old and childless, Abraham believed God's promise that his descendants would be as many as the stars, and God counted it to him for righteousness (Genesis 15:5–6). God changed his name to Abraham, saying he would be a father of many nations (Genesis 17:5). Sarah's servant Hagar bore him Ishmael, and at last Sarah gave birth to Isaac. Abraham's faith was tested when God asked him to offer Isaac, and God provided a ram instead (Genesis 22:13).
