What is the Song of Solomon about?

The Song of Solomon is the twenty-second book of the Bible. Its first verse calls it "The song of songs, which is Solomon's" (Song of Solomon 1:1). It is a poem of love between a bride and her beloved, told through their voices and a group called the daughters of Jerusalem. One of its best-known lines is "I am the rose of Sharon, and the lily of the valleys" (Song of Solomon 2:1).

The poem is full of pictures from nature: vineyards, gardens, spices, roes, doves and the cedars of Lebanon. It describes the joy of the couple together, their longing when apart, and Solomon's wedding procession (Song of Solomon 3:11). More than once the daughters of Jerusalem are told, "stir not up, nor awake my love, till he please" (Song of Solomon 2:7). Near the end it says, "Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it" (Song of Solomon 8:7).
