What is the Book of Hosea about?
Hosea is the twenty-eighth book of the Bible. Hosea prophesied mainly to the northern kingdom of Israel. God told him to marry Gomer, the daughter of Diblaim, as a sign of how Israel had been unfaithful to the Lord (Hosea 1:2–3). Their children were given names that carried messages to the nation, such as Loammi, because God said, "ye are not my people" (Hosea 1:9).
Later God told Hosea to love his wife again and he bought her back, just as the Lord loved Israel though they turned to other gods (Hosea 3:1–2). Hosea warns that "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge" (Hosea 4:6). Yet the book is full of tender love. God remembers calling Israel out of Egypt as a son and asks, "How shall I give thee up, Ephraim?" (Hosea 11:1; 11:8). It ends with a call to return to the Lord and a promise of healing (Hosea 14:1–4).
