What is the Book of Jeremiah about?
Jeremiah is the twenty-fourth book of the Bible. Jeremiah was from a family of priests in Anathoth and was called to be a prophet while still young. God told him, "Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee" (Jeremiah 1:5). He prophesied in Judah from the days of King Josiah until Jerusalem fell to Babylon.
His message was hard. He warned that judgment was coming for idolatry and injustice, and he used object lessons such as a ruined linen girdle, clay remade at the potter's house (Jeremiah 18:1–6) and a yoke worn on his neck. He was mocked, beaten, put in the stocks and let down into a muddy dungeon (Jeremiah 38:6). Yet his book also holds hope. He wrote to the exiles that God's thoughts toward them were "thoughts of peace, and not of evil" (Jeremiah 29:11), and he foretold a new covenant written in the heart (Jeremiah 31:31–33).
