Who was King David?
David was the youngest son of Jesse of Bethlehem and a shepherd when the prophet Samuel anointed him as the future king of Israel (1 Samuel 16:11–13). As a young man he defeated the Philistine giant Goliath with a sling and a stone (1 Samuel 17:49). He served in King Saul's court, became close friends with Saul's son Jonathan, and later spent years on the run when Saul turned against him.
After Saul's death David became king, first over Judah and then over all Israel, and made Jerusalem his capital (2 Samuel 5:3–7). God promised that his throne would be established forever (2 Samuel 7:16). His reign also included his sin with Bathsheba and the death of her husband Uriah, followed by repentance, and later the rebellion of his son Absalom. Many psalms are credited to David, and his son Solomon succeeded him as king.
