Who was Moses?
Moses was the prophet God used to lead Israel out of slavery in Egypt. Born to a Levite family when Pharaoh had ordered Hebrew baby boys to be killed, he was hidden in a basket among the reeds of the Nile and found by Pharaoh's daughter, who raised him as her son (Exodus 2:1–10). As a grown man he fled to Midian, where God spoke to him from a burning bush (Exodus 3:1–10).
With his brother Aaron, Moses confronted Pharaoh until the ten plagues ended in Israel's release. He led the people through the Red Sea and received the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai (Exodus 20). For forty years he guided Israel through the wilderness. Because he struck the rock instead of speaking to it, he was not allowed to enter Canaan (Numbers 20:7–12). He died on Mount Nebo after seeing the Promised Land from afar (Deuteronomy 34:1–5).
