Who was Esther?
Esther was a Jewish orphan raised by her cousin Mordecai in Shushan, the royal city of Persia. Her Hebrew name was Hadassah (Esther 2:7). When King Ahasuerus removed Queen Vashti, Esther was chosen from among many young women and made queen, though at Mordecai's instruction she did not reveal her people.
The king's official Haman, angry that Mordecai would not bow to him, plotted to destroy all the Jews in the empire. Mordecai urged Esther to speak up, asking whether she had come to the kingdom for such a time as this (Esther 4:14). Esther fasted, then risked her life by going to the king uninvited, saying, "if I perish, I perish" (Esther 4:16). At a banquet she exposed Haman's plot, and he was hanged on the gallows he had prepared for Mordecai (Esther 7:10). The Jews celebrated their deliverance with the feast of Purim.
