Who was Ruth?

Ruth was a woman from Moab who married into an Israelite family from Bethlehem that had moved to Moab during a famine. After her father-in-law, her husband and his brother all died, her mother-in-law Naomi decided to return home. Ruth refused to leave her, saying, "whither thou goest, I will go" and "thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God" (Ruth 1:16).

In Bethlehem Ruth gleaned barley in the fields of Boaz, a wealthy relative of Naomi's husband, who treated her kindly (Ruth 2:8–12). Following Naomi's advice, Ruth went to Boaz at the threshing floor and asked him to act as her near kinsman. Boaz redeemed the family land and married her (Ruth 4:9–10). Their son Obed became the grandfather of King David (Ruth 4:17), and Ruth is named in the genealogy of Jesus (Matthew 1:5).
