What is the Book of Numbers about?
Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible. It takes its name from two counts of Israel's fighting men, one in the wilderness of Sinai and another a generation later on the plains of Moab (Numbers 1:1–3; 26:1–4). Between them lies the journey through the wilderness. Moses sends twelve men to spy out Canaan, but ten bring back a fearful report and the people refuse to go in. Only Joshua and Caleb trust God, and the nation is sentenced to wander forty years (Numbers 14:30–34).
The book also tells of Aaron's rod that budded (Numbers 17:8), water from the rock at Meribah, and the serpent of brass that healed everyone who looked at it (Numbers 21:8–9). The prophet Balaam is stopped by an angel and rebuked by his own donkey, then blesses Israel instead of cursing it (Numbers 22:28). Numbers also contains the priestly blessing, "The LORD bless thee, and keep thee" (Numbers 6:24).
