What is the Gospel of Mark about?
Mark is the second book of the New Testament and the shortest of the four Gospels. It opens with John the Baptist preaching in the wilderness and baptizing Jesus in the river Jordan, where a voice from heaven says, "Thou art my beloved Son" (Mark 1:11). The story moves quickly, often using the word "straightway," as Jesus calls fishermen to follow him, heals the sick, casts out devils and calms a storm on the sea (Mark 4:39).
Halfway through, Peter confesses that Jesus is the Christ (Mark 8:29), and Jesus begins to teach that he must suffer, die and rise again. The second half follows him to Jerusalem, through the last supper, his arrest in Gethsemane and his crucifixion. Jesus says he came "not to be ministered unto, but to minister" (Mark 10:45). The book ends with the women finding the stone rolled away and a young man in white telling them that Jesus is risen (Mark 16:6).
