What is the Book of Micah about?
Micah is the thirty-third book of the Bible. Micah the Morasthite prophesied in the days of Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, concerning both Samaria and Jerusalem (Micah 1:1). He spoke against people who plotted evil on their beds, seized fields and houses, and leaders who judged for a reward.
Alongside judgment, Micah gives great hope. He foresees a day when nations will beat their swords into plowshares (Micah 4:3). He names Bethlehem Ephratah as the place from which a ruler in Israel will come (Micah 5:2), a verse quoted when Herod asked where the Christ should be born (Matthew 2:4–6). His best-known words sum up what God requires: "to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God" (Micah 6:8). The book closes by praising a God who pardons sin and casts it into the depths of the sea (Micah 7:18–19).
