What is the Book of 1 John about?
1 John is a short New Testament letter. The writer begins by speaking of what he has heard, seen and handled of "the Word of life" (1 John 1:1), and writes so that his readers may share in fellowship with God. He teaches that God is light, and that if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us (1 John 1:9).
The letter returns again and again to love. It tells believers not to love the world (1 John 2:15) and gives a simple test: anyone who says he loves God but hates his brother is a liar. Twice it states that God is love (1 John 4:8, 16), and that God showed his love by sending his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. It warns against antichrists who deny the Son, and it was written so that believers may know that they have eternal life (1 John 5:13).
