What is the Gospel of John about?

The Gospel of John is the fourth Gospel and is traditionally attributed to the apostle John, the disciple whom Jesus loved (John 21:20–24). It begins before creation: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God" (John 1:1). It tells how the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us in Jesus.

John records signs that show who Jesus is, beginning with turning water into wine at a wedding in Cana (John 2:1–11) and including the raising of Lazarus. It contains the conversation with Nicodemus and the well-known verse John 3:16, along with sayings such as "I am the bread of life" and "I am the good shepherd." Several chapters cover the Last Supper, where Jesus washed His disciples' feet. The book ends with the resurrection and Thomas confessing, "My Lord and my God" (John 20:28).
