What is the Book of Proverbs about?

Proverbs is a book of wise sayings for everyday life, much of it traditionally attributed to King Solomon (Proverbs 1:1). Its theme is stated early: "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge" (Proverbs 1:7). The opening chapters are written as a father's advice to his son, urging him to seek wisdom like hidden treasure and to avoid bad company.

Most of the book is made up of short, memorable sayings about work, money, speech, friendship, family and honesty, often contrasting the wise and the foolish, or the diligent and the lazy. Well-known lines include "Trust in the LORD with all thine heart" (Proverbs 3:5) and "Pride goeth before destruction" (Proverbs 16:18). Later sections are credited to Agur and King Lemuel, and the book closes with a portrait of a virtuous woman (Proverbs 31:10–31).
