What is the Gospel of Luke about?

The Gospel of Luke is traditionally attributed to Luke, a companion of Paul whom Paul calls "the beloved physician" (Colossians 4:14). Addressed to a man named Theophilus, it sets out an orderly account of the life of Jesus (Luke 1:1–4). It gives the fullest story of His birth, including the angel Gabriel's visit to Mary, the manger in Bethlehem and the shepherds in the fields (Luke 2:8–14).

Luke records several parables found in no other Gospel, among them the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:30–37), the lost coin and the prodigal son. It shows Jesus reaching out to people others looked down on, such as the tax collector Zacchaeus. After the crucifixion, Luke tells how the risen Jesus walked with two disciples on the road to Emmaus and was known to them in the breaking of bread (Luke 24:13–35).
