Who was Noah?
Noah was a just man who found grace in the eyes of the Lord at a time when the earth was filled with violence (Genesis 6:8–9). God told him to build an ark of gopher wood and to bring his wife, his three sons Shem, Ham and Japheth, their wives, and animals of every kind on board (Genesis 6:14–20).
The rain fell for forty days and forty nights, and the waters covered the earth (Genesis 7:12). When the flood ended, the ark rested on the mountains of Ararat. Noah sent out a raven and then a dove, which came back with an olive leaf in her mouth (Genesis 8:11). After leaving the ark he built an altar to the Lord, and God made a covenant never again to destroy the earth by a flood, setting the rainbow in the clouds as its sign (Genesis 9:13–15). Noah lived 950 years.
