What is the Book of Psalms about?

Psalms is a collection of 150 songs and prayers used in the worship of Israel. Many carry the title "A Psalm of David," while others are credited to Asaph, the sons of Korah, Solomon and Moses, whose prayer is Psalm 90. The book is divided into five parts, each closing with a word of praise.

The psalms cover the whole range of human feeling. Some are joyful hymns of thanks, some are cries for help in trouble, and some confess sin and ask for mercy (Psalm 51:1–2). Well-known passages include "The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want" (Psalm 23:1), the long praise of God's word in Psalm 119, and the closing call, "Let every thing that hath breath praise the LORD" (Psalm 150:6). Psalm 117 is the shortest chapter in the Bible, and Psalm 119 is the longest.
