Who was Daniel?
Daniel was a young man from Judah taken to Babylon after King Nebuchadnezzar besieged Jerusalem. Chosen with his friends Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah to serve in the king's court, he was given the name Belteshazzar. He would not defile himself with the king's food and asked for pulse and water instead (Daniel 1:8–12). God gave him wisdom and understanding in visions and dreams.
When his three friends, known as Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, would not bow to a golden image, they were thrown into a fiery furnace and came out unharmed (Daniel 3:25–27). Daniel read the writing on the wall at Belshazzar's feast (Daniel 5:25–28). Under King Darius he kept praying three times a day despite a royal decree and was thrown into the lions' den, but God shut the lions' mouths (Daniel 6:22). The book also records his visions of kingdoms to come.
