What is the Book of James about?
James is a short New Testament letter from "James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ" (James 1:1), written to believers scattered abroad. It is full of practical teaching. James tells readers to count it all joy when they face trials and to ask God for wisdom, for he gives to all men liberally (James 1:5). He urges them to be doers of the word, and not hearers only (James 1:22).
He warns against favoring the rich over the poor and teaches that "faith without works is dead" (James 2:26), pointing to Abraham and Rahab as examples. In chapter 3 he compares the tongue to a small fire that can kindle a great matter. The letter closes with a call to patience, like a farmer waiting for rain, and to pray for the sick, for "the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much" (James 5:16).
