Who was King Solomon?

Solomon was the son of King David and Bathsheba and became king of Israel after his father. Early in his reign God appeared to him in a dream and told him to ask for anything. Solomon asked for an understanding heart to judge the people, and God gave him wisdom along with riches and honor (1 Kings 3:9–13). His wisdom was shown when two women each claimed the same baby (1 Kings 3:16–28).

Solomon built the temple of the Lord in Jerusalem and dedicated it with a long prayer (1 Kings 8:22–23). His fame spread so far that the Queen of Sheba came to test him with hard questions. He spoke three thousand proverbs, and his songs numbered a thousand and five (1 Kings 4:32). In his old age his many foreign wives turned his heart after other gods (1 Kings 11:4), and after his death the kingdom was divided.
