What is the Book of Ephesians about?
Ephesians is a letter from the apostle Paul, written while he was a prisoner, to the saints at Ephesus. The first half praises God for every spiritual blessing in Christ. Paul explains that believers are saved by grace through faith, "not of works, lest any man should boast" (Ephesians 2:8–9), and that Christ has broken down the wall between Jews and Gentiles to make one new people (Ephesians 2:14).
The second half turns to everyday life. Paul urges unity, with "one Lord, one faith, one baptism" (Ephesians 4:5), and tells believers to put away anger and be kind to one another. He gives instructions for husbands and wives, children and parents, servants and masters. The letter ends by telling readers to put on the whole armor of God, with truth, righteousness, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit (Ephesians 6:11–17).
