What is the Book of Genesis about?

Genesis is the first book of the Bible and is traditionally attributed to Moses. It opens with God creating the heavens and the earth in six days and resting on the seventh (Genesis 1:1–2:3). It then tells of Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden, the first sin, Cain and Abel, and the great flood that Noah and his family survived in the ark (Genesis 6:13–22).

From chapter 12 the story follows one family. God calls Abram to leave his country and promises to make of him a great nation (Genesis 12:1–3). The book follows Isaac, Jacob and Jacob's twelve sons, and ends with Joseph, sold by his brothers into Egypt, rising to rule under Pharaoh and saving his family from famine. Joseph tells his brothers that what they meant for evil, God meant for good (Genesis 50:20).
