Who was Joseph?

Joseph was the eleventh son of Jacob and the first son of Rachel. His father loved him more than his brothers and made him a coat of many colors (Genesis 37:3). After Joseph told them his dreams of sheaves, and of the sun, moon and stars bowing to him, his jealous brothers threw him into a pit and sold him to traders bound for Egypt.

In Egypt he served in Potiphar's house, was falsely accused and put in prison, and there interpreted the dreams of Pharaoh's butler and baker. When Pharaoh dreamed of seven fat and seven lean cows, Joseph explained that seven years of plenty would be followed by seven years of famine, and Pharaoh set him over all Egypt (Genesis 41:39–41). His brothers later came to buy grain, and Joseph forgave them (Genesis 50:20).
