Who was Elijah?

Elijah the Tishbite was a prophet in the northern kingdom of Israel during the reign of King Ahab. He told Ahab there would be no dew or rain except at his word (1 Kings 17:1). During the drought he was fed by ravens at the brook Cherith, and then by a widow in Zarephath, whose meal and oil did not run out and whose son he raised to life.

On Mount Carmel Elijah challenged the prophets of Baal to call down fire from heaven. Their god gave no answer, but when Elijah prayed, the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the sacrifice (1 Kings 18:38). Fleeing from Queen Jezebel, he heard God in a still small voice at Horeb (1 Kings 19:12) and called Elisha to follow him. At the end of his ministry a chariot of fire parted him from Elisha, and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven (2 Kings 2:11).
